Cartagena is two meters above sea level and its exact coordinates are 10° 25′ Latitude North – 75° 31′ Longitude West. The city is located on the northern coast of the Colombian Caribbean, with easy access by road, air and sea.

POPULATION
Cartagena has a population of approximately 1,013,400. It is Colombia’s fifth largest city, after Bogotá, Medellín, Cali and Barranquilla.

CLIMATE
Tropical and humid, with a sea breeze and average temperatures of between 28˚C and 32˚C. Dry season usually runs from December to March.

TRANSPORT
For safety reasons, be sure to order a taxi over the phone or using apps like Easy Tappsi or Uber. Both can be used with a credit card.

MONEY
You can exchange foreign currencies for Colombian pesos in most hotels, bureaux de change and the main local banks. There are also Western Union offices for money transfers.

TIPPING
While they are not obligatory in Colombia, tips are a kind gesture from clients who wish to reward good service. In restaurants and bars, before receiving the bill you will be asked if you accept the inclusion of a 10% voluntary tip.

FESTIVALS
Cartagena celebrates its founding on June 1, while November 11 is Independence Day. Throughout this week, the city celebrates the Independence Parties, one of which includes the national beauty pageant.

RECOGNITION
Cartagena’s historic center was declared National Patrimony by Colombia in 1959 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984.
